Saare birdwatching tower

Lake Sutlepa is the relict lake with the richest birdlife in Silma Nature Reserve. The body of water is especially crowded with birds in the spring, in April and May. Around this time, thousands of transient migratory ducks and geese flock here for a rest, while many species of birds begin nesting in the lake’s reed beds.

The most prominent birds in Lake Sutlepa are great egrets, cormorants, and red-necked grebes, but a keen eye might also spot western marsh harriers, black terns or little gulls.

Early mornings or late evenings in the tower make for a unique experience, when various reed-dwelling birds grow vocal. The Eurasian bittern, water rail, spotted crake, Savi’s warbler and great reed warbler are some examples of birds that can be heard from the tower. Their performances early in the morning and late in the evening offer an unforgettable experience.
